It’s Not My Fault

It's Not My Fault

Pope Benedict XVI … issued an unprecedented public apology to the victims of paeodophile priests. The letter does not admit any responsibility on the part of the Vatican in relation to the scandals,

It's Your Fault

Rather than blaming abuse on an oppressive, conservative environment within the Irish Catholic church, Benedict singles out the creeping influence of liberal, secular society for weakening resolve against it.

I wonder if Benedict truly believes the shit he says, or if he’s still trying to convince himself? People can readily twist their own memories and patterns of thinking certainly, but it’s hard to believe that anyone else believes this garbage, let alone the person who should know the truth about the Catholic coverups/etc best of us all.

I flip flop on that. Sometimes I think he’s just lying to defend the faith, other times I see him as just a superstitious old man.

  3. I love Daniel Goleman on our ability to deceive ourselves. Our instinct for self preservation means we subconsciously blank out stuff which we might find unbearable- a survival technique. Of course, some of us are more accomplished at ignoring huge swathes of our lives than others. It occurs to me that here, we could have someone whose own carefully constructed reality has simply shut out all that does not fit in with his world view.

So while he probably really deeply believes what he is saying to the world, on some level- allbeit a dusty cellar in his mind-he knows the truth.

It occurs to me world leaders should be seeing therapists as a matter of course. For their own mental health and the wellbeing of the world…

“world leaders should be seeing therapists as a matter of course”

    True, dat

Everyone seems to think these priests are being deviant, disagreeing only on the nature of the deviance. But that’s impossible. With so many people doing the same thing so horrible, it’s clearly a ritual, an official secret practice of Catholicism itself. Therapists can’t do anything about it, because it’s not a mental problem. It’s a military problem, an act of organized terror by the Vatican acting as a nation.

  6. Victor Says:

So, why would that be impossible? There are a lot of Catholic priests. 400,000 from what I could find. A percentage of them having some sort of harmful sexual issues doesn’t seem at all far fetched. Especially since the very act of volunteering to live a sexually celibate life could be self selecting a population with a sense of harmful desires in themselves.
