God of the Week: Shahar (dawn)

11/29/2010: Shahar

Shahar is a Cannaanite goddess of the dawn, sister of Shalim, goddess of the dusk. She is represented in the Ugaritic pantheon, as well as in the Hebrew Bible, in Psalm 110:3 (dawn’s womb), and Psalm 139:9 (if I take the wings of Shahar (dawn)), as well as Isaiah 14:12, where Helel, the morning star, is revealed to be the son of Shahar.

How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn!
