Heracles is an ancient Greek demi-god, fathered by Zeus and mothered by a mortal woman. His followers observed his mythic death, in which his spirit ascended to mount Olympus, during a festival known as Herakleia. Though often thought of as a purely mythological character by most historians, Greek mythographer Euhemerus believed Heracles to have been an historical character that was given cult status after his death.
