God of the Week: Nabu

5/23/2011: Nabu

Not only is Nabu the ancient Babylonian god of wisdom and writing but, in the DC Comics universe, he is the god that empowers Dr Fate. The god takes control of Kent Nelson once Nelson dons the golden helmet.

Nabu was worshiped as the son of the god Marduk, patron deity of the Babylonian pantheon, even though he appears to have originated as a Semitic god. He is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible in Isaiah 46:1, which makes mention of the New Year Festival tradition of carrying the idol of Nabu  of from his temple in Borsippa to Babylon to be near his father.

Their idols are borne by beasts of burden.
The images that are carried about are burdensome,
a burden for the weary.
-Isaiah 46:1 NIV

huh, patron of the scribes and gets to ride a dragon around?
Sounds like I just got myself a new god!

Sorry Siris. We had fun, lots of booze, but it’s time I settle down with a more sober & serious god.
