God of the Week: Melchizedek

06/27/2011: Melchizedek

Melchizedek is a figure from Hebrew mythology. In Genesis 14:18-20 he appears as a fairly minor character, and is identified as the king of Salem. However, in the later texts known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, he is elavated to godhood. The fragment dubbed 11Q13 refers to Melchizedek as ‘Elohim’, god in Hebrew. He is spoken of as of atoning for the sins of the human race, and judging them on judgement day.
